Mr. Grippi and his video crew put together a video that shows "classic harvey" in a state of demolition. It was well done and they even put the Boyz to Men song 'It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday' in the backgound. When the kids in my 1st period class saw it, I was suprised to hear a lot of them say how sad it was to see the old building being torn down. While I have my share of memories from my 11.5 years at Harvey Classic, I thought I would write you out some lyrics that will make you feel not so sad about losing the old building...

Web 2.0 vs. Web 1.0

Pre web vs. Web 1.0 vs. Web 2.0

So my sweet and cool leather jacket got caught on a door last winter. While this may seem inconsequential to you, it made me kind of salty. Also there was a tiny circle-ly area in my back that kept getting cold.
I want this fissure repaired quickly and effectively. After I got done googling different iterations of "leather repair kit" or "leather jacket repair I was taken to amazon.com where the first result was this leather repair kit.
I was almost ready to buy, but then I saw the reviews.
I then looked at the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section of the page and saw that this product has a much better rating.
So it got me to thinking:
How would this catastrophic event have been handled differently in the two previous "Eras" (for lack of a better term) compared to how this played out today?
- The Pre-Iternet Era?- Web 1.0 Era?

I fixed the hole and it worked out well for me. The jacket looks good. However, I never posted a review of the product. Am I a bad person for that?

Blog Guidelines / Rules

Before we get too much further into blogging, there are some things that we need to talk about.
We need to set some guidelines so that we can continue to use this as an instructional tool without any hassle from me, your parents, the administrators or the school district.I have three rules that I would like to start with:1) This is an educational blog, not a personal one. Please keep it professional. That doesn't mean it has to be boring, but that does mean that we don't talk about what we are doing on a Saturday night. (Besides, you guys already have your myspaces, facebooks, etc. for that.)
2) Pls dnt use txting lngwige. W R nt txting, so use crct englsh. An LOL here or there is fine, but studies have show that the use of blogging as an educational tool can increase proficiency in writing.
3) Develop your thoughts. When asked to comment on a blog as an assignment, don't just say 'Yeah dude, that rocks'. Take time to develop your thoughts. Try to contribute something new. Do some additional research. Add an anecdotal experience.Other than that, there are some common sense things I would like for us to develop together.Assignment for Thursday 12-11: 1) Review the following web sites to look over other teachers' blogging "rules" and other articles related to blogging.

WHAT THE HECK IS A BLOG?

This is the second year I have used this blog as a teaching aid. Some of the posts will be reposted, like this one below from December of 2008.

You can look back at the blog archives to see how I have used this in the past, but I will be adding new and hopefully interesting stuff to the blog from time to time.

A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and someone who keeps a blog is a "blogger." Economics, Test Two

Howdy Kids! Hope you had fun with the Supply and Demand Game!

For the second economics test we will be covering the following topics!

1) Supply, Law of Supply, Types of Good (Inferior, Normal, Complementary, Subsitute) Supply Schedules, Supply Curves.
2) Demand, Law of Demand, Elasticity of Demand, Demand Schedules, Demand Curves
3) Supply and Demand (together), Equillibrium.

The test will be developed by YOU.

Each student must contribute at least three multiple choice and one short answert question in a response to the blog comment. (For you newbs, That means click on 'Post a Comment' to submit your test questions.)

A very high percentage of the test questions will be taken from your submitted questions.

Also, include the answers to your questions, so you can help each other STUDY!

This will count as 25% of your test grade!

From time to time, in Economics I will ask you to take a screen-capture shot and post it to your blog.

This would be helpful for activities like yesterday's production possibilities group project.

Here are the steps to post a screen-capture shot to your blogs.

1) Have the screen you want to capture active, so you can see it.

2) Hit the CTRL Button and the Print Scrn Button at the same time. This place a capture of your screen on your clipboard.

3) Go to your Blog site. Sign in and hit new post. Include any text with your post.

4) Click the add image button in the post editor.

5) In the pop up window hit BROWSE... then select the image you just saved.

6) Hit upload image.

That's it! It takes a little practice and it's not as complicated as it seems.

ECONOMICS Blog

Twitter... Really?

A long long time ago, a young fellow named Jeremy was trying to call his buddy Howie to see if he wanted to hang out. As he dialed his phone that was connected to a CORD (OMG) on the wall (OMGx2), he heard a strange noise. He did not panic. He did not know what Howie was doing and that was OK. He carried on with his life.

Fast forward 25 years...A teacher looks around his computer class and it's as if everyone has developed severe abdominal cramps. Students are hunched over with necks looking toward the floor. Why? He sees that many are texting and/or reading text messages. He realizes this is a phenomenon not limited only to his classes, or even his school. THEY ARE ALL HYPERCONNECTED!

The use of SMS (tech language for texting) has skyrocketed. He thought he had seen and heard it all until he heard of "twitter". Check it out.

(By the way, some of you are Hyperactive and Hyperconnected, but that's a different story for a different time)

ASSIGNMENT FOR TODAY (1-7-09)

It seems mobile technology has made all of us 'connectivity addicts'. Is it really so important that we know that our friend is doing laundry? My theory is that we are spending a lot of time isolated by technology (on line, texting, emailing, surfing, etc) and the trend of hyper-connectivity is a way to bring us together or make us feel closer, more connected to friends and loved ones.

Please develop a response to this post in the comments. ( 25 points ) If you would like full credit, please make it well thought, and it should be about three or four paragraphs. Think it out before you write!

Algorithms, Computer Careers and YOU

These stats are from a CSTA (Computer Science Teacher's Association) Article.

· Only 26 percent of U.S. schools require students to take computer science courses, even though computers pervade nearly every aspect of our lives;

· Lack of time in students' schedules is cited as the reason for declining enrollment in high school courses; and

· Computer science education is plagued by public misperceptions including a students' misunderstanding that it is all about playing video games and surfing the Internet.

"The United States cannot ignore the fact that there will be a shortage of qualified candidates for the 1.5 million computer and information technology jobs by 2012," stated co-author of the report and CSTA President Chris Stephenson...

A couple of questions I would like you all to address in your comments to this post:

1) Would you take a higher level course than this if it were available? Or is this one 'hard enough' already?

2) If the U.S. education system cannot fill industry's demand for qualified computer and technology professionals, what might happen? Where will companies find jobs?

Algorithms and Pseudocode

In learning about Algorithms, they can get pretty complicated pretty quick. I remember sleeping through my college computer science lectures then struggling to figure out what the heck was going on (perhaps this is why I ended up as a business major).

Algorithms are really just a set of instructions. Whenever you are following a recipe, doing your hair, walking the dog, you are following a set routine.

In order to better understand algorithms, check out this wikipedia entry on 'Pseudo code'.

Now that you are all pseudo experts, create a pseudo program about something that you do.

Don't worry too much about the syntax - just give it a shot. Try to think like a computer does...

Some ideas:

Write an algorithm in Pseudo code for:

- Walking the dog
- Getting ready in the morning
- Picking out a movie to watch
- Selecting an outfit to wear

A couple ideas for blog entries / comments

Here are a few ideas for blog entries. Please be reminded that you are to have at least two well thought out entries to get full credit for your blogging assignment.

Idea #1 - This time of the year, it seems a lot of publications go with a "list" theme. Time Magazine has an awesome Top 10 everything piece. Another cool list to look at is the 100 top websites for the year ahead. Check the sites out then make your own end of the year list about something you are interested in.

Idea #2 - The end of the calendar year, a lot of us make new years resolutions. What are your goals for the year ahead?

Answer in the comments or create your own blog entries about either of these topics, or blog about something you want to blog about. I don't want to get too hung up about being to specific in my requirements for grading these. I can see that many of your blogs are really well done, so the only requirements are: 1) At least two professional sounding, well thought out, blog entries using correct grammar, punctuation and language. 2) At least five professional sounding, well thought out, blog comments using correct grammarcomments on a classmates (or my) blog. Also, don't be afraid to add hyperlinks and pictures. They can help spice up your entries a little.

As a sidenote, I will be around today to check your access tutorials (Colleges, Bikes, Books, Federal Legislature Databases) as I have delayed grading these long enough.

Inspect those Gadgets

Adding gadgets to your website or blog is a great way to customize content that is already available. Using content that is already available somewhere else is called syndication.

Please use Wednesday, 12-17, to inspect the gadgets available for you to use on your school blog. Select at least two gadgets to add to your blog. As always, please be school appropriate.

Go-go gadget blog! (Inspector Gadget was a sweet cartoon I used to run home from school to watch in the 5th grade.)

Blog Grading and Guidelines

Well, here's the deal with the blogs and how they will be graded. The initial blog should be set up by the end of day today. Two well thought out entries should be posted on your blog. This initial set up is worth 50 points.

You will also receive 10 points per good, intelligent, professional comments that you post on other classmates. You should post at least 5 times to get the full 50 points.

We will be adding additional things (RSS feeds, widgets, HTML code) to our blogs on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Additional Guidelines:
Remember, this is a school blog. It is also open for anyone to see. Therefore, if you make or have made any inappropriate comments, go delete them now. (THAT MEANS YOU HOLLISTER)

Also, while I encourage candor about feelings and want your posts to be 'real', I can not allow any disparaging remarks about fellow staff members. If you have written a post that has negative comments, please revise it accordingly.

Please avoid making inane comments, as I have to read through all comments and make sure they are appropriate. This is a class activity. After the semester I would encourage you all to continue to blog about whatever you want. But during this class activity, keep it professional.

As I was trying to come up with a good "WEB 2.0" activity, I was going to make a nice powerpoint and worksheet. But that is so 2004.
